Inspired by the traditional Korean architecture ‘Hanok’, aim to explore dynamic forms created by each curved ‘Kiwa’ pieces with the beauty of its balance; the gentle act of balancing.

This project was Inspired by the aesthetic structures of traditional Korean roofs, [kiwa], a replica of the traditions interpreted in ceramics. Though [kiwa] carries the heritage of traditional Korean architecture, it is being replaced with modern structures- a forgotten object. This project was an attempt to reflect its beauty in different variations of the forms, appreciating the historic background as well as its elegance shown in the balancing act- to seek ways to reflect its beauty in the use of ceramics through the act of balancing.

KIWA

" [kiwa] " ; meaning roof tiles in Korean, symbolises both home and the heritage of the traditional Korean architecture that comes with it. The distinctive shape of Kiwa was formed to cover the roof to block snow and rainwater from flooding and to prevent corrosion of roofing materials by allowing them to flow down, as well as to decorate and decorate the building.



It can be seen in different shapes and names depending on where they are used for roofs, and have changed in various ways according to each era and region, showing different characteristics. All of these various roof tiles were produced in consideration of their use before building, distributed as one of the national construction projects. Though it carries the heritage of traditional Korean architecture, it is being replaced with modern structures- as forgotten object.
